Electronic tracking of working hours mandatory in 2027

The reform to the Federal Labor Law published in the DOF on May 1, 2026, brings more than just a reduction in working hours. It creates a new obligation for all employers: to electronically record the start and end of each worker's workday.

The obligation is in Article 132, section XXXIV, and is enforceable starting January 1, 2027. Paper lists, the Excel sheet someone fills out on Friday, and "I've arrived" WhatsApp messages will no longer be enough.

What changes for HR starting in January

Until now, many companies managed attendance out of habit. With the reform, time tracking becomes an employer duty with its own penalty. Article 994, section IV Bis, provides for fines from 250 to 5,000 UMA. At the 2026 UMA value, that ranges from $29,327 to $586,550 pesos.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) will issue the regulations that will define the technical requirements for the record, taking effect on January 1, 2027. As of the closing of this article, they have not yet been published. In the meantime, the prudent step is to prepare a system that provides clear, tamper-proof, and accessible evidence of each workday.

How a company prepares with Sora

Jornada Laboral is Sora's time clock. It lives on the same platform where your contracts, agreements, and employee files are already stored:

  1. Signed agreement: Each employee digitally accepts the workday recording rules, and the agreement remains in their file.

  2. Clock-in in seconds: Your team clocks in with facial recognition from the Android and iOS app, or from a tablet in kiosk mode. It even works offline.

  3. Calculated hours: Sora automatically calculates regular and overtime hours. If something doesn't add up, HR requests clarification, and every correction is logged with an author and reason.

  4. Signed workday: At the end of each period, the employee signs their hours. HR can review the history whenever needed, whether for an internal audit or an inspection.

Clarification on the platform's scope

Sora is a management and evidence tool for internal labor compliance. Sora does not perform procedures, registrations, or validations before the STPS. Once the Ministry publishes its guidelines, each company must ensure that its process complies with them. Sora ensures that workday information exists, is organized, and can be verified.

January comes quickly. Companies that start recording today will be prepared, not rushed.
