40-Hour Workweek Reform in Mexico: 2027 to 2030 Schedule

The 40-hour workweek is now law. The constitutional reform to Article 123 was published in the DOF on March 3, 2026, and the reform to the Federal Labor Law on May 1. The reduction will be gradual: two hours less each year.
That provides leeway. It also creates a false sense that there is plenty of time. Every January, for four years, your company's schedules, shifts, and contracts will have to change.
The official schedule
Year | Maximum weekly work hours | Weekly overtime cap |
2026 | 48 hours | 9 hours |
2027 | 46 hours | 9 hours |
2028 | 44 hours | 10 hours |
2029 | 42 hours | 11 hours |
2030 | 40 hours | 12 hours |
The law is clear on one point: the reduction cannot result in lower wages or reduced benefits. Salary, the year-end bonus (aguinaldo), and the vacation bonus remain unchanged.
What changes in HR operations
Each reduction requires reviewing the schedules agreed upon in individual employment contracts, the internal work regulations, and shift distribution. If the actual schedule does not match the documented one, the company is left exposed.
Added to this is electronic time tracking, mandatory starting January 1, 2027. From that day on, the schedule you signed and the hours actually worked will be compared. And what was a normal workweek in 2026 will generate overtime in 2027.

How Sora supports each stage
Schedule addenda: The platform generates adjustments to contracts as the legal limit changes each year.
Valid signatures: Each employee signs with a Cryptographic Signature with Facial Biometrics, validated against RENAPO with liveness detection.
Integrated Time Tracking: Sora's time clock records actual hours with facial recognition, from a mobile phone or tablet, and automatically calculates ordinary and overtime hours for each week.
Signed work hours: At the close of each pay period, the employee signs their hours. This ensures each transition year is documented under the limit in effect at that time.
Clarification regarding platform scope
Sora organizes contracts, signatures, and time-tracking records for internal labor compliance. Sora does not substitute legal counsel or process paperwork before the STPS. Decisions regarding shifts and work reorganization remain the responsibility of each company. Sora ensures that every change is signed, dated, and accessible.
Four years of adjustments are best managed with a single place where contracts, signatures, and work hours live.
